Arts Camp 2013 – Huge Success!

Kathy-YoungWhat a terrific Arts Camp this year! Seventy students in grades 1-6 converged on NorthEast last week to experience God’s love through the Arts. The children started their day with a devotion and prayer before splitting into groups for excellent instruction in either Music/Drama/Puppets or Visual Arts. This year’s theme was “Reaching Up, Reaching Out”.

On the Visual Arts side students used the mediums of markers, paint, wool, plaster, and even chewing gum to show ways we use our hands to serve God. The children learned about warm and cool colors, symmetry, abstract, design, and new terms like “monochromatic”.  Throughout the week, campers completed individual pieces to keep and collaborated on pieces for the Friday evening gallery and silent auction.

On the Music side students learned about the elements of tempo, dynamics, and key through songs about Jesus and His love for us.  They wrote rap songs with Bible verses and explored the areas of audio/visual engineering, drama, puppets, and percussion. They contributed to the artwork for the gallery and included the Visual Arts campers in the Friday evening performance.

How blessed we are to have had 32 devoted adults and teens volunteer their time, expertise and energy to provide such a phenomenal experience for the campers. It was amazing to see the level of skill, abundance of enthusiasm, and genuine desire of Arts Camp Staff to show Christ’s love to these children throughout the week.  From integrating Bible stories with the lessons, playing with the kids at recreation time, to just having conversations with them during snack time, staff created memories these children will keep with them for a lifetime.

This week of awesomeness culminated with a “Grand Finale” Friday evening showcasing the experiences for the week.  Seven pieces of art were sold at a silent auction to benefit missions.  The generosity of our patrons raised $370 for Mocha Club, which provides clean water in Africa, and Lighthouse Ministries here in Lexington.

Arts Camp gets better each year!  We are already talking about new ideas for next year.  Mark your calendars for mid-June 2014.
